THE OTHER

Whilst the subject (or the ‘I’) exists both in-itself and for-itself (en-soi et pour-soi), it does not exist in isolation but alongside other subjectivities, and therefore has a third mode of existence, described as ‘being-for-others’ (être-pour-autrui). [...] This relationship inaugurates a dialectic of desire, in which the subject strives after an object that is always in the possession of the other.

David Macey, Dictionary of Critical Theory, Penguin Books.

75006 Paris

Date de vernissage 10 février 2010

Dates exposition du 10 février au 13 mars 2010

Horaires 10h -13h / 14h -19h du mardi au samedi

Directeur Alessandro Pron

Contact presse Marie Cambefort

Tel. +33 (0)1 49 29 07 74

e-mail: contact@galerieitalienne.com

Questions regarding the sexual connotations of private and public spheres are at the center of Emgreen & Dragset’s conceptual artistic practice. For Texte zur Kunst, the two produced an artists’ edition that forms part of their artistic reflection and curatorial mise-en-scène of the private rooms of collectors at the current 53rd Venice Biennale. In "The Collectors", Emgreen & Dragset installed their own pieces and those by befriended artists in the fictitious residencies of A. Family and Mr. B at the Danish and Nordic Pavilion in the Giardini to develop a narrative about the relation between art, design, taste, and sexual identity in times of crisis. The edition object Gefundene Identit&$228;t [Found Identity], consists of a wallet containing personal belongings of an unknown person. Parts of this portable collection are a letter, a photograph, a money bill, a condom and other objects of everyday life. Altogether, they only give a vague hint at the identity of their owner.
