À l’occasion de Chic Dessin, Less is More Projects présente un projet d’exposition spécialement conçu pour le thème du Salon: les cabinets de dessins contemporains. A cette thématique, les curateurs ont répondu par une exposition de groupe non conventionnelle, qui comme son titre l’indique, tente de recréer cet instant à la fois tragique et excitant, où les oeuvres se livrent à leur dernier dialogue avant la dispersion totale et irréversible d'une collection.
"La collection”, écrit Pascal Griener, “est un phénomène essentiellement éphémère. La mort, grande pourvoyeuse des ventes, en orchestre la naissance comme la fin, et défait les ensembles patiemment constitués. Chaque objet, alors rendu à une liberté provisoire, interpelle une nouvelle génération d'amateurs."
En proposant ainsi aux spectateurs d'entrer dans le privé d'une collection, de pouvoir la regarder en partie avec les yeux du collectionneur, nous invitons à porter le regard au delà, sur le coeur secret des collections:
Le Collectionneur.
Les oeuvres des artistes sélectionnés, accompagnées de quelques pièces de mobilier et objets seront réunies en un tout cohérent, reconstitution fictive d'une pièce de l'appartement du mystérieux Monsieur X.
Chaque oeuvre, chaque objet exposé à la vue de tous, met ainsi à nu toutes les facettes de sa personnalité, même les plus intimes et les plus cachées. Dans sa dimension la plus théâtrale, la collection fournit le décor d'une mise en scène de l'antre où le connaisseur a l'habitude de recevoir exclusivement ses amis les plus intimes.
L'expérience du collectionneur, sa sophistication, son oeil et sa culture ont guidé Monsieur X à travers des territoires jusqu'alors inconnus. Faisant partie d'un petit cercle d'amateurs inspirés il a ouvert la voie et les yeux d'une nouvelle génération aux plaisirs esthétiques complexes et variés de la découverte. Peu de temps après sa disparition mystérieuse, sa collection va être dispersée dans le cadre de Chic Dessin.
Les curateurs Alberto Brusamolino, Paolo Giardi et Michel Boubon sont les coupables de cette minutieuse mise en scène.

À propos de Less is More Projects
Less is More Projects est un bureau, un site web, une future vitrine d'exposition, une forme d'intervention dirigée par deux artistes, Alberto Brusamolino et Michel Boubon, avec l'estimable collaboration d'un esprit critique aussi artiste et ami de longue date, Paolo Giardi.
Sans espace d'exposition permanente, basé à Paris, Less is More Projects ne représente pas d'artiste mais développe des activités et organise des expositions en dehors de son bureau. La galerie apparaît et disparaît, elle est partout et nulle part à la fois. Son programme veux suggérer une approche différente de la production, présentation et consommation de l'art contemporain.
L'exposition "Wish You Were Here" à marqué le lancement officiel de Less is More Projects à Paris en octobre 2009 dans le cadre de Slick Art Fair.
En décembre 2009, Less Is More Projects Editions a proposé ses premiers tirages en édition limitée.

Phil Ashcroft
né en 1970

The unknown is a space at once fascinating and fearful by mankind’s technological advances and the romantic notion that there still lies undiscovered elements to the world in which we live. A derelict hospital, oil depots, nuclear power stations, the abominable snowman; collectively these semi-surreal settings and cartoon-like motifs appear as mysterious manifestations, phenomena both real and imagined.
Combining influences from abstract expressionism, British landscape painting, Japanese woodcuts, and graphic street art, Ashcroft integrates varied visual styles to generate a crossover between space, object and environment.
“At first sight, Ashcroft’s images seem to represent a utopia of modern structures. It is only at closer inspection that we realise that there are hints at some unspecified catastrophe in his desolate urban landscape images, empty of human existence. He designs semi-surreal and cartoon-like settings, inspired by youthful obsessions in science fiction. Le travail artistique de Michel Boubon se nourrit d’une passion originaire pour les témoignages artistiques protéiformes du passé. Des études parisiennes d’histoire et d’histoire de l’art en université puis à l’Ecole du Louvre l’entraînent très vite, au-delà de la fréquentation quasi quotidienne des plus grands chefs d’œuvres de la peinture, vers l’art de la copie. Vélasquez, Le Caravage, les maîtres hollandais du XVIIème siècle comme les italiens du quattrocento (Crivelli, Pisanello, Vinci), le fascinent et l’inspirent.
Deux genres trouvent aujourd’hui leur écho dans son travail : le portrait, parce que reflet de l’âme dans la traduction d’un regard, d’une posture ou d’un geste, et la vanité qui, par l'utilisation d'éléments tels que crânes, verres brisés, repas inachevés, fleurs fanées, rappelle sans cesse à l'homme du XVIIème siècle la brièveté de son passage sur terre.
Tout le travail plastique de Boubon oscille entre ces deux pôles, de la vie immortalisée à la mort mise en scène.
Au moment où des photographes comme Désirée Dolron, Carla van de Puttelaar, Jeff Bark, ou Jack Pierson revisitent les poncifs des XIVème, XVème, et XVIème siècles, Boubon force la limite de la représentation humaine parfois jusqu’au paradoxe de son absence, toujours avec le médium traditionnel de l’huile, induisant un regard décalé sur une universalité qui défie le temps et les siècles.

Alberto Brusamolino

La fascination pour la figure masculine, l'imagerie chrétienne, les sujets sacrés, plus spécialement la peinture de dévotion de la renaissance ont toujours hanté l'oeuvre de Alberto Brusamolino, ainsi que la variété de leurs approches dans un effort de confrontation avec notre expérience intime.
Comme beaucoup d'autres artistes, Brusamolino a ressenti le besoin d'étudier l'art du passé.
Les chefs-d'oeuvres du passé ne donnent pas seulement des solutions techniques; Ils apportent aussi un large panel d'allégories, de symboles lui permettant de transférer ses propres sentiments dans ses oeuvres.
Plus récemment,la technique du découpage utilisant comme matières premières à la fois des magazines et ses propres photographies l'ont emmené vers une exploration encore plus intime de la représentation du corps humain.
Usant de sources contemporaines: magazines, photographies et revues d'art, il manipule les significations, mélange les contextes par superposition et juxtaposition.

Paolo Giardi

Paolo Giardi exploite de nombreuses disciplines au service de l’ art du montage. Il en résulte une fascinante exploration du langage de la citation, de l’allusion et de l’adaptation. Usant d’association, il tente simultanément de manipuler, de déplacer des images préexistantes, hors de leur contexte original, brouillant ainsi l’expérience de la mémoire et de la perception. Ses personnages, comme dans une pièce de Beckett, semblent toujours égarés dans une scène dont ils ne font pas partie.
Giardi n’a jamais été exclusivement un artiste peintre; son expérience est aussi celle d’un concepteur de vitrines,d’un illustrateur, ou d’un graveur. Toutes ces strates sont clairement visibles dans son oeuvre. Le sens du déplacement, généré par une combinaison de langages différents et pourtant vaguement familiers, d’imagerie reconnaissable, et d’autres éléments plus graphiques et abstraits, évoque la nature d’une mémoire oubliée et lointaine. Ce qui se trouve devant nos yeux devient hiéroglyphe à déchiffrer; une telle imagerie pourra à la fois amuser ou effrayer le spectateur.

Ian Gonczarow

Ian Gonczarow lives and works in London and Moscow. He was born 1975 in Lancashire. He lived and worked in the northeast of England until 2007. During this period his work developed a greater engagement with political issues. Ian has been living and working in London since 2006 and is a graduate from the MFA Art Practice at Goldsmiths University of London. In 2008 Ian was selected to represent Goldsmiths in the Red Mansion Art Prize. This involved a residency in Beijing and subsequent show at the Slade Research Centre in Woburn Place.
Ian teaches onto the Art and Design Foundation course at the British Higher School of Art and Design in Moscow.

Graphic designer and artist Iain Hector has been making screen prints since November 2008, operating out of the Print Club studio in East London. In 2009 he exhibited works at Secret Blisters and Print Club Pop-up Shop.

Susana Lamberti

Susana Lamberti est une femme de l'ombre. Elle nous invite dans sa gravure à une immersion dans la matière, dans les noirs et les gris de hasards programmés, minutieusement préparés par le choix des matériaux et les gestes qui ont aidé la lumière à se frayer un chemin. Son travail nous entraîne dans des douceurs, des matitudes, des reflets et des violences qui fonctionnent comme une déclinaison sensorielle, un paysage naturel de sensations intimes enfin reconnues.
Une première empreinte de tissu sur le vernis ouvre le bal. La matière fait la loi, la texture dicte la suite. De l'ombre vers la lumière, les trames, au fil des gestes, se superposent, les formes sortent de l'ombre, remontent d'elles-mêmes. Aléatoire de la morsure de l'acide, selon le temps laissé au temps, que révélera au final un geste sûr. Et à mesure des états, Lamberti extrait de la confusion originale, du chaos, une clarté. Elle ordonne et orchestre la matière, affrontant le noir brut des creux et celui, plus calme, de la surface, pour que tout ceci prenne un sens que rien ne définit à l'avance. C'est la matière qui l'amène, du noir vers le blanc, en silence, en respect, simple guide, révélateur elle-même de ce que « cette fois-là », le métal, puis le papier réservera. Une surprise? Au tirage, le sens de lecture qui s'impose reste temporaire, et contient seulement le chemin qui guidera le travail vers une prochaine étape, un prochain état.
Le travail de gravure de Susana Lamberti s'inscrit dans une recherche spatiale plus générale, qui trouve son origine dans la sculpture qu'elle a toujours pratiquée. Tourner autour de la gravure et laisser l'espace agir, laisser l'oeuvre trouver son axe, son socle, son cadre, et enfin son titre.

Alicia Nauta
vit et travaille à Toronto, Canada
Printmaker Alicia Nauta lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, and is finishing her BFA in Printmaking at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She works primarily within Letterpress and Silkscreen methods, creating both text and images works. Some themes in her works are that of existential dread, escapism, and dreams. She also co-owns and runs a small artist shop and gallery space in Toronto called Good Blood, Bad Blood. Alicia has exhibited at Toronto galleries such as Art Metropole, Narwhal Art Projects and 107 Shaw Gallery.

Ceal Warnants présente: Stories for Bedtime
In 2006, the body of work ‘Stories for Bedtime’ was seized at a show by Hampshire's Criminal Investigations Department as it was alleged that the book had broken seven points of the law, including the Obscene Publications Act 1964 and The Indecent Displays Act 1959. However, the work was later released by the Crown Prosecution Service, without charge. Currently Warnants is working on the second title in the series, ‘On British Youth’.

For Chic Drawing Art Fair, Less is More Projects presents an exhibition project especially adapted to the context of this art fair: a showcase of contemporary drawings. Curators have responded with an unconventional exhibition that, as the title suggests, will recreate an allegorical stage set where the portrait of an imaginary collector and the sale of his contemporary art collection are presented.
"The collection", writes Pascal Griener, "is an essentially ephemeral phenomenon. Death, the great auctioneer, orchestrates its inception and its end, dissolving the patiently constituted groups of works. Each objects is then released to a temporary freedom, and speaks to a new generation of art lovers."
Visitors are invited to share, to learn and to see the privacy of collecting through the eyes of a collector.
Alongside the interior decoration and furniture, the selected artworks will transform the space into a domestic ambience; a room in the appartment of the mysterious collector, Mister X.
The identity of Mister X, his obsessive character, lifestyle and passions, will compose the story of this exhibition. The installation will have a closer resemblance to a small film set rather than a conventional art display.
Throughout his lifetime, Mister X had devoted much of his time, and considerable passion, to the process of collecting works of art. His varied aesthetic pleasures, in-depth cultural knowledge and sophisticated eye guided him through what were still largely unchartered waters.
Curators Alberto Brusamolino, Paolo Giardi et Michel Boubon are the culprits of this meticulous staging .

About Less is More Projects
Less is More Projects is an office, a future looking glass door, a form of intervention, initiated and run by artists Alberto Brusamolino and Michel Boubon with the worthy collaboration of an old friend, artist and shadow consultant, Paolo Giardi.
Without a permanent physical space and based in Paris, Less is More Projects is not representing any artist but creates exhibitions and situations out of the walls of its office. The gallery appears and disappears, it’s everywhere and nowhere at the same time. We would like to suggest a new approch of art production, presentation and consumption, another way to do and to show. Less is More Projects is a new independent organisation supported by its members.
First stage of this adventure was the launch of Less is More Projects at Slick 09 in Paris with “Wish You Were Here” as the inaugural exhibition. December 2009, Less is More Projects has launched the editions section presenting its first limited edition prints by artist Paolo Giardi.

The artistic work of Michel Boubon feeds on a native passion for protean artistic tokens of the past. Studies in history and in history of art in the parisian university and in "l'école du Louvre", involve him swiftly, beyond the quasi daily fréquentation of the greatests masterpieces of painting, towards the art of replica. Velasquez, Caravaggio, dutch masters of the 17th century, and quattrocento's italians (Crivelli, Pisanello, Vinci), fascinate and inspire him.
Two genres find an echo in his work: portrait and vanitas. Portrait as a reflection of the soul through the translation of a look, a posture or a gesture. Vanitas with its use of elements like skulls, broken glasses, unfinished meals, faded flowers that are continuously reminiscent to the man of the 17th century of the brevity of his life. The whole of art of Boubon oscillate between these two poles, from immortalised to staged life.
While photographers like Desirée Dolron, Carla van Puttelaar, Jeff Bark, or Jack Pierson revisit the clichés of the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, Boubon forces the limit of human representation, sometimes as far as the paradox of his absence, always using the traditional oil painting tecnique, inducing a moved glance on a universality over time and centuries.

Alberto Brusamolino

A fascination with male figure, Christian imagery, sacred subjects and older art, especially devotional painting of the Renaissance has often haunted the work of Alberto Brusamolino as he uses a variety of different approaches to the subjects in an effort to confront our experience with them and our relationship to them. Like many other artists, Brusamolino has felt the need to study the art of the past.
Masterpieces from the past not only suggest technical skills; they also offer a wide range of allegories and symbols for translating personal feelings into works. More recently, Brusamolino’s experimentations with the cut up technique and the utilization of source material from magazines together with his own photographs, brought him closer to an exploration of the figurative representations of the human body. Using contemporary sources from magazines, photographs and art revue, Brusamolino manipulates meanings and shifts contexts through layering and juxtaposition.

Paolo Giardi

Paolo Giardi works across a variety of disciplines producing art that explores the tecnique of the montage. This has led to a fascination with, and exploration of, the languages of citation, allusion and adaptation. Through the exercise of association, he simultaneously attemps to manipulate and transport existing images out of their original context, blurring the experiences of memory and perception. His characters, like in a Beckett play, seems always absorbed by a stage they do not belong to.
Giardi has never been an artist who paints exclusevely; his background is also that of a window dresser, an illustrator, a retail designer, a print maker, and all these layers are clearly visible in his work. The sense of displacement, generated by a combination of different and yet vaguely familiar idioms, recognisable imagery and more graphic and abstract elements, evokes the nature of a forgotten or distant memory. What lays before our eyes becomes a hieroglyph to be decifered. Such imagery could be at once amusing or alarming to the viewer.
