HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

Nous voilà installés dans un nouvel espace qui, non seulement est l'adresse où nous vivons, mais également un lieu d'exposition lumineux et un bureau, duquel naîtront nos futurs projets.

Brouiller la frontière entre le privé et le public a toujours été notre singularité, mélangeant ce qui pourrait-être considéré comme des collections personnelles avec des installations transitoires et des interventions d'artistes. Le débat entre atelier/habitation d'artiste et galerie, activité privée et publique, a été initié en 1970 avec une performance de Vito Acconci intitulée "Room Piece". Chaque week-end, le contenu d'une pièce de son appartement New Yorkais était déménagé dans la galerie huit blocs plus loin, générant ainsi d'incessants va-et-viens entre les deux lieux, au gré de ses besoins.

Qu'est-ce qu'un espace d'exposition aujourd'hui? Est-ce une collection, un kaleïdoscope, une collision de coïncidences?

Pour son ouverture officielle, Less Is More Projects invite sept artistes et leur donne carte blanche pour choisir et transformer non seulement l'espace de la galerie, mais aussi une partie de l'espace privé. Contrairement à l'immaculé white cube, espace spirituel et ascétique, cette exposition utilise une logique (spatiale et mentale) amenant à utiliser des espaces généralement considérés comme périphériques à la galerie. Table, chaises, canapé, bureaux, étagères ..., bref tout l'attirail composant un intérieur domestique sont normalement considérés comme des obstacles. Ici nous souhaitons qu'ils puissent également participer à l'impulsion créatrice: les artistes répondront eux-même à ces challenges.

Nous aurons le plaisir de vous accueillir le soir du vendredi 30 Septembre à partir de 17 heures au 5 rue du Dahomey, 11ème arrondissement, afin de fêter avec nous l'inauguration du nouvel espace curatorial de Less Is More Project, et sa nouvelle exposition: "Please, Do Not Disturb".

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

We are now settled, not only in our home, but also in a brighter, bigger exhibition space and office from where we will choreograph our future projects and public events.

Blurring the boundaries between the private and the public has always been the aim of our organization, mixing what is perceived as personal collections and belongings with transient/temporary installations and artists’ interventions. The debate on the increasingly narrowed distinctions between the artist’s studio and the gallery was firstly introduced in 1970 with Vito Acconci’s performance entitled ‘Room Piece’. He would, in this instance, move furniture and objects back and forth, from his New York apartment to his gallery eight blocks uptown, according to his will and need.

What is an exhibition space today? Is it a collection, a kaleidoscope, a collision of coincidences?

For its first official opening, Less is More Projects invites seven artists and gives them carte blanche in selecting and transforming what is in fact, not only an exhibition space but also a private/domestic one. Unlike the pristine white cube-like, spiritual and ascetic space of the gallery, we propose, as a stage, areas that are usually (spatially and mentally) peripheral. Table and chairs, sofa, desks and shelves, personal belongings and paraphernalia that creates a domestic interior are objects that can normally be seen as obstacles, but we think that they will also trigger a creative impulse. The artists themselves will respond to these site-specific challenges.

We very much look forward welcoming you on the evening of Friday 30th of September from 5pm onwards at 5 rue du Dahomey, 11th arrondissement of Paris, to celebrate with us the inauguration of the new curatorial space of Less is More Projects and its first sensational exhibition "Please, Do Not Disturb".

Less is More Projets est un bureau concevant des projects d'expositions implanté dans un appartement, depuis Octobre 2009. Dans le cadre de Slick 2009, Chic Chic Dessin 2010 et Chic Art Fair, nous avons organisé trois expositions en collaboration avec des artistes, des galeries, des revues d'art contemporain, et présenté le travail de 23 artistes.

En 2011, ce bureau se déplace vers un plus grand espace comprenant un lieu d'exposition ouvert au public. Ce nouvel emplacement souhaite être un lieu d'enquête, une réflexion sur la galerie en tant que telle, physiquement et conceptuellement.

Less is More Projects is delighted to announce its move to a new space located in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, next to Bastille's urban area and galleries.

From the beginning of May, 2011 this new location will house the expanded office of Less is More Projects as well as a new curatorial space which will be a place for investigation and a reflection of the gallery space, from a physical and conceptual point of view. We will open with a specific group exhibition “Please, Do Not Disturb” on September 2011. In the meantime you can come visit us by appointment.

Less is more Projects was launched from a private apartment in October 2009 as a contemporary and independent organisation. As part of Slick 2009, Chic Dessin 2010 and Chic Art Fair, Less is More Projects curated three specific shows, presenting the work of 23 artists, both French and international, in collaboration with art galleries, contemporary art magazines and other organisations.

BIOGRAPHIE DE L’ARTISTE | ARTIST’ BIOGRAPHY

Paolo Giardi exploite de nombreuses disciplines au service de l’ art du montage. Il en résulte une fascinante exploration du langage de la citation, de l’allusion et de l’adaptation. Usant d’association, il tente simultanément de manipuler, de déplacer des images préexistantes, hors de leur contexte original, brouillant ainsi l’expérience de la mémoire et de la perception. Giardi n’a jamais été exclusivement un artiste peintre; son expérience est aussi celle d’un concepteur de vitrines,d’un illustrateur, ou d’un graveur. Toutes ces strates sont clairement visibles dans son oeuvre.
Le sens du déplacement, généré par une combinaison de langages différents et pourtant vaguement familiers, d’imagerie reconnaissable, et d’autres éléments plus graphiques et abstraits, évoque la nature d’une mémoire oubliée et lointaine. Ce qui se trouve devant nos yeux devient hiéroglyphe à déchiffrer; une telle imagerie pourra à la fois amuser ou effrayer le spectateur.

Paolo Giardi works across a variety of disciplines producing art that explores the tecnique of the montage. This has led to a fascination with, and exploration of, the languages of citation, allusion and adaptation. Through the exercise of association, he simultaneously attemps to manipulate and transport existing images out of their original context, blurring the experiences of memory and perception. His characters, like in a Beckett play, seems always absorbed by a stage they do not belong to.

Giardi has never been an artist who paints exclusevely; his background is also that of a window dresser, an illustrator, a retail designer, a print maker, and all these layers are clearly visible in his work. The sense of displacement, generated by a combination of different and yet vaguely familiar idioms, recognisable imagery and more graphic and abstract elements, evokes the nature of a forgotten or distant memory. What lays before our eyes becomes a hieroglyph to be decifered. Such imagery could be at once amusing or alarming to the viewer.

“I like your work” is a year long programme of one work, one artist, small scale curated exhibitions presented as every two months event online and in our office space in complement of our exhibitions programme.

The unknown is a space at once fascinating and fearful by mankind’s technological advances and the romantic notion that there still lies undiscovered elements to the world in which we live. A derelict hospital, oil depots, nuclear power stations, the abominable snowman; collectively these semi-surreal settings and cartoon-like motifs appear as mysterious manifestations, phenomena both real and imagined.

Combining influences from abstract expressionism, British landscape painting, Japanese woodcuts, and graphic street art, Ashcroft integrates varied visual styles to generate a crossover between space, object and environment.

“At first sight, Ashcroft’s images seem to represent a utopia of modern structures. It is only at closer inspection that we realise that there are hints at some unspecified catastrophe in his desolate urban landscape images, empty of human existence. He designs semi-surreal and cartoon-like settings, inspired by youthful obsessions in science fiction. His work has been situated in art gallery settings as well as in graphic design and consumer products.” - The Garman Ryan Collection, New Art Gallery Walsall (2007)

Phil Ashcroft is an artist based in London. Solo exhibitions include Toxicity, Margaret Harvey Gallery, UH Galleries, St Albans (2006); Yeti In Hong Kong, EXIT, Hong Kong (2005) and Nitro Deluxe, Deptford X, London (2001). Ashcroft was a finalist in the Celeste Art Prize 2007 and selected for Contemporary Art Society’s ARTfutures 2007 and 2005, Bloomberg SPACE, London.

Recent exhibitions include Chic Dessin Art Fair, Paris, with Less is More Projects (2010);The Free Art Fair, Barbican, London (2009); a commissioned, site-specific billboard for Deptford X, London (2009);Heart of Glass, Concrete and Glass, London (2008); Wonder Island, Schwartz Gallery, London (2008); Special Relationship, Scion Space, Los Angeles (2008); The Golden Record, The Collective Gallery, Edinburgh touring to The Lincoln Collection and g39, Cardiff (2008-09); Out of the Box, Garman Ryan Permanent Collection, New Art Gallery, Walsall (2007-08).

Ashcroft also exhibits as ‘PhlAsh’ collaborating on live-painting projects in galleries and alternative spaces from street locations to shops. These have included Special Relationship, Scion Space, Los Angeles (2008), Elephant Technique, Village Underground (2006), All The People We Like Are Dead, London (2004), and Graffiti Meets Windows 1, Hank-Yu Department Store, Osaka (2002).

And Tomorrow Is Already Yesterday, or How the Heart Skips a Beat

Love seems quite a major theme in movies, literature, music, but not so much in art. Or not anymore. Somehow death is still a big subject. Nature and the self. Sometimes religion. Art is the crucial subject in art.

The XX – Heart Skipped A Beat

Synopsis: The new series of watercolours entitled ‘And Tomorrow is Already
Yesterday, or How the Heart Skips a Beat’ are conceived as random frames from a
romantic Photostory. In sketching and re-sketching the preparatory collages, Giardi keeps adding different and contrasting elements to his narrative, following the method of composition or writing in Proust’s brouillons. The final execution, a montage of images, techniques and styles borrowed from vintage magazines, graphic design, literature and comic strips, presents us with a “circle of love”, a world of signs that must be deciphered, that is, interpreted.
